The kids are out of school on October 18th and 19th. I may as well take off of work and go somewhere with them since I don't have a sitter lined up for the 18th anyway.
I am pretty sure, at this point, that we will fly up to Niagara Falls on Thursday and fly out on Friday. The kids have never seen the falls and I have not been since childhood. We plan on going into Canada since the views are better there.
We have not yet been able to find a trip where we can hop from state to state but this may be the one. It is a bit ambitious but I think I have figured out a hop from Niagara falls to Albuquerque, NM. From there, we could drive to one of two parks in Colorado. If we go to the park that is my first choice, Great Dunes National Park, we could hit Santa Fe on the way there or back. My second choice is to head west, visit Four Corners Monument where we can stand in four states at the same time. After that, we would visit a park in Colorado. We would spend the night somewhere in the vicinity and be back in Albuquerque by Sunday to fly home.
Sticking to our rules, you could say that visiting a monument counts as an activity and the four Corners Monument is in four states.... But that would not be in the spirit of our endeavor. We may do it because it is cool but I think we will still have to make separate trips to Arizona and Utah.
Either way, this trip will be very ambitious. Especially on a budget.
You have to be flexible when flying standby with two children (ages 9 & 11) but I look at each trip as an adventure and some times just getting there (and back) is the biggest part of the trip. We fly free - thanks to my husband working for an airline - and we travel on a budget, often taking our own food and forgoing souveniers. We sometimes plan and sometimes wing it but we always manage to have fun.
Our Goal:
OUR GOAL: Visit fifty states within the next two years. (edited: We missed our two year deadline but still hope to visit all 50 states)
The Rules: States we visit or where we have already visited as a family (three or more members) count. States visited by only one or two family members (such as a business trip) don't count.
Layovers and stopovers don't count. We have to actually either drive though a state or do some activity, outside of the airport, in that state.
